- “ If you alter, even by a millimeter,
the way people look at reality ...
then you can change it. ” - ~ James Baldwin

- Our Mission -
- "We use the arts to open minds and change lives, with James Baldwin as catalyst. To ensure that
his message — that inequality and injustice impact ALL of us — will be heard and debated by those
who need it most. To engage diverse communities, to inspire dialogue across differences, to help us
find common ground. To expand understanding of ourselves and each other.”

- With James Baldwin as catalyst, our goal is to explore identity and human potential,
one community at a time. To generate “dialogue across differences" among people who, all too often, exist in silos. To use the arts to open minds and change lives.
To achieve this, we partner with community co-hosts — whose contact lists bring diverse
experiences and opinions — then build events around our award-winning film classic, JAMES BALDWIN: THE PRICE OF THE TICKET. We pair film screenings with
performance pieces, art installations, readings, music and workshops, all with guided
discussions. During the past decade, our mix of localized interaction, education and
advocacy has reached tens of thousands.
Why identity and potential? As Baldwin insists repeatedly, this is not just about race or gender, about those who don’t fit ’the norm.’ It's about ALL of us. We need to find
common ground, a way to build a better future — and he offers an eloquent roadmap.
His words remind us that if we examine ourselves more closely, if we explore what
we all share, we’ll find ways to stop fearing difference, to listen and even love each other.
To “become better than we are.”
- What We Do ... and Why -
- In keeping with our JBP mission — "to open minds and change lives, with James Baldwin as catalyst” — our outreach has evolved and expanded. In addition to The Price of the Ticket, we offer multiple ways for the public to experience Baldwin: each one a different approach, each one a complement to the others.
