- James Baldwin: The Price of the Ticket ~ Film Screening
An emotional portrait, a social critique and a passionate plea for human equality. Produced & directed by writer/filmmaker Karen Thorsen, this feature-length documentary was inspired by her collaboration with Baldwin during the last two years of his life. First broadcast by PBS in 1989, premiered at Sundance in 1990, now restored & re-mastered in Widescreen-2KHD, this film has been honored in 25 countries and seen by millions.

After workshopping performances in both the US & Europe, this spoken word ‘hybrid' is now ready for prime time. Spanning four decades of Baldwin’s fiction, non-fiction and archival recordings, it features a Black actor, a White Actor and Jimmy OnScreen — plus music from his personal playlist. An exploration of the ground-breaking play, Blues for Mister Charlie, featuring a 1964 film adaptation of Blues not seen in public for over six decades … until now. Recently restored & digitized with the support of Ohio State University, this 30-minute film is a historic treasure. Created to help promote Baldwin’s two-and-a-half-hour Broadway opus, it combines scenes performed by his original cast with commentary by the National Council of Churches. Often presented in conjunction with our live events, this design-your-own exhibition of artworks is drawn from the James Baldwin Project's curated collection: a mix of travel-ready canvases and high-res digital prints on lightweight backing. Brief descriptions accompany individual images; QR codes link viewers to artist bios and contact info. To augment this presentation, some event hosts solicit Baldwin-inspired artwork from within their own communities — often in collaboration with local schools. This social identity workshop builds on fourteen Baldwin quotations — each one designed to prompt in-depth discussions of societal labels, self-esteem and self-worth. To facilitate group exchanges, individual quotes are projected onscreen, then shared on large-format cards; archival film clips of Baldwin and his world are added for historical context. Suitable for all ages, this experience generates “dialogue across differences" among people who, all too often, exist in silos.
